Trust And Understanding
Lead Consultant and business owner - Dr. Stijn J. M. Van Malderen
Dr. Van Malderen is an expert in analytical chemistry with an academic background in ICP-MS and XRF analysis and a professional background in elemental analysis instrumentation. He is the author of dozens of high-profile publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and holds multiple patents. He is regularly invited to speak at international scientific conferences.
Until September 2020, Van Malderen held the position of postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University, as part of the X-ray Microspectroscopy and Imaging research unit and conducted research involving cluster computing, hardware development and machine learning at the Hard X-ray Micro/Nano-Probe beamline P06 of the PETRA III synchrotron operated by DESY, the largest synchrotron facility in the world.
Van Malderen obtained his degree of Doctor of Science: Chemistry in June 2017, on the topic of the optimization of methods based on Laser Ablation – Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) for 2-D and 3-D elemental mapping. His doctoral work was conducted at the Atomic and Mass Spectrometry research unit of Ghent University, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Frank Vanhaecke.
Van Malderen has contributed to the development of hardware at Teledyne Photon Machines, such as the Iridia laser ablation platform, the Cobalt ablation chamber, and the Aerosol Rapid Introduction System (ARIS). He is the founder of HDIP, a leading commercial-grade software package for mass spectrometry data processing.
Finding the best instruments
Procuring an analytical instrument can be a daunting task; tenders need to be made, large budgets are involved, shipping and customs are complex, and sales managers misrepresent how the device will work in your lab. AtomScopy consultants assist our clients to purchase the best instrument from reputable sellers by providing an independent evaluation of instruments based on cost, quality, performance, and reliability. Our experience in the industry helps us inform our clients on what to look out for and what to avoid. Whether you are a first-time buyer or an established lab, AtomScopy informs you on a purchase decision, so you will not regret buying the wrong instrument.
Projects often hinge on the knowledge and expertise of the operator as much as the performance of the instrument. As experts in elemental analysis, we know how to get the most out of your instrumentation. AtomScopy also helps clients to establish and validate workflows in elemental analysis to ensure consistent and reliable results. This encompases developing sample-preparation strategies (milling, embedding, polishing, digestion, pelletizing, isolation) and special environments, as well as creating SOPs and QC protocols.
